Chapter Ten

Dan was up early the next morning, anxious to get the day over with. He was going to do his best to convince Nancy he wasn’t her ideal husband. Therefore, he didn’t comb his hair after he got out of bed, he put on his work jeans, the ones he used when he was mucking his mare’s stall or when he tended to his garden. And lastly, he wore a very old western shirt that was missing a few buttons and didn’t smell the greatest. As Dan looked himself over in the mirror, he was sure that he’d have Nancy running for the hills upon seeing him. Though, he hoped he didn’t run into Phoebe looking like this.

After a quick breakfast, Dan headed into town with butterflies in his stomach. He knew he looked foolish and those who knew him best would more than likely think that something was very wrong with him. He felt a little embarrassed but was certain his plan would work. Later, he was sure he’d look back on this memory and laugh heartily to himself. But till later, he was feeling a bit of trepidation as he rode into town.

“Morning, Mr. Mavis!” called one of the stable hands as he rode into the livery stables. The man looked at him and did a double take. “You doing alright?” Dan had to do his best not to laugh as he dismounted and handed the reins over to the man.

“I’m right as rain,” Dan said with a nod before he made his way out of the barn. He hurried towards the inn, hoping that Nancy was up and ready to have a proper tour of the town. He had a few businessmen in mind that he wanted to introduce to Nancy with the hope of showing her that the town was full of single men and that he wasn’t the best candidate for a husband.

As Dan stepped into the inn, he felt his palms start to grow damp from nervousness. He hoped that Nancy was already up and waiting for him so he could get this little situation over with. Dan also didn’t want to remain in this silly get-up longer than he needed to. As he walked through the lobby of the inn, he met Mr. Tibet just as he was coming out of the kitchen. The older man stopped dead in his tracks and simply stared at Dan for a moment as though he wasn’t sure what he was seeing.

“Have you gone mad, Mr. Mavis?” Mr. Tibet asked after a moment.

“No, Mr. Tibet. Just playing a little pretend is all,” Dan replied. He thought his words were just in time as Nancy came walking out of the kitchen with Mrs. Benning right behind her. The married woman had grown round with child and she seemed to be doing her best to keep up with Nancy as the young woman continued to chatter on. But once Nancy caught sight of Dan, she immediately stopped talking and simply stared at him.
